The Spiritual Journey: Discovering the benefits of Hiking and Walking in Islam. Learning lessons from the Quran and Sunnah.

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, finding moments of tranquility and spiritual connection can be challenging. However, Islam encourages believers to seek these moments through various means, and one often overlooked path is hiking and walking. In this article, we will explore the virtues of hiking and walking from an Islamic perspective, drawing inspiration from the Quran and Sunnah.

Contemplation in Nature

The Quran frequently invites believers to ponder over the signs of Allah’s creation. Hiking and walking in the natural world provide a perfect backdrop for this contemplation. The serene beauty of nature, from majestic mountains to flowing rivers, serves as a reminder of Allah’s boundless creativity.

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.” (Quran, 3:190)

Connection with Allah
Spending time in nature allows us to witness the precision of Allah’s natural order. As you hike through the woods or walk along a beach, consider the harmony of the ecosystem, the cycles of day and night, and the seasons. Such observations can deepen your connection with Allah, the Creator of this perfectly balanced universe.

“And He it is Who has made the night and the day subservient for you, and the sun and the moon; each one of them follows its course to an appointed time.” (Quran, 14:33)

Allah had a conversation with Prophet Moses (AS) on a mountain. This is where Musa (AS) received signs and lessons to help him develop a deeper connection to Allah.

Solitude and Spiritual Retreat

The Cave Hira, where the first revelation of the Quran was received by the Prophet Muhammad, offers a profound example of seeking solitude and spiritual connection. While not everyone can journey to such a historic site, hiking in remote areas or taking a quiet walk in nature can provide similar opportunities for self-reflection and spiritual retreat. What is fascinating here is that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would hike to Cave Hira annually to find this solitude and ponder over the meaning of life.

Community and Brotherhood

Islam encourages believers to maintain strong bonds of brotherhood and community. Group hikes or walks can foster unity and provide a space for positive interactions. Engaging in these activities with fellow believers can strengthen the sense of community and deepen relationships.   Islam encourages believers to maintain strong bonds of brotherhood and community. “Hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.” (Quran, 3:103)

Walking and Sunnah
Hiking and walking, when approached with mindfulness and intention, can become more than just physical exercise. They can be spiritual journeys that align with Islamic principles of reflection, appreciation of creation, physical health, and community building. These activities allow us to witness the signs of Allah’s creation firsthand, drawing us closer to the Creator while rejuvenating our souls in the process. So, the next time you lace up your hiking boots or take a leisurely walk, remember that you are not only caring for your body but also nurturing your spirit in accordance with the wisdom of Islam.

When I first hiked in Deosai National Park, Pakistan many year ago my guide gave me some excellent tips to make my hike comfortable and help me conserve my energy. While writing this I looked into what we know about the Prophet (SAW) and his Sunnah. Astonishingly, it reminded me of what my guide had told me all this years ago.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known for his graceful and dignified walk, and he encouraged his followers to walk in a similar way. Here are some tips on how to walk in the Sunnah:

  • Walk with a moderate pace. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not walk too fast or too slow. He walked at a pace that was comfortable for him and those walking with him.
  • Walk with a straight back and your head held high. He (peace be upon him) did not slouch or hunch over. He walked with his back straight and his head held high.
  • Look straight ahead, not down at the ground. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not look down at the ground as he walked. He looked straight ahead, with his gaze focused on his destination.
  • Swing your arms naturally. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not swing his arms excessively or awkwardly.
  • Walk with a sense of purpose. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not walk aimlessly. He walked with a sense of purpose, knowing where he was going and why.

There are many lessons in the Quran and Sunnah that can help us teach in understanding how to live a better and fulfilled life.
